Rockland County Spring Valley (WABC)—Rockland County High School was forced to return to distance learning due to concerns about sending students home and dangerous goods in the building.

Officials at Spring Valley High School sent a letter to parents on Tuesday informing them of potentially dangerous items in some classrooms.

“We have determined that it is not possible to implement a direct education program as well as examine and develop plans to address this serious concern,” the letter said. “With the advice of the district’s architectural engineering company, and very carefully, we made the decision to transfer Spring Valley High School students to distance learning for the rest of the week.”

Officials have said the problem is black mold and needs to be fixed, but the extent of the repairs required is unknown.

During the building’s closure, investigators will assess the extent and properties of the material and determine the most effective and safest mitigation measures.

As a result, the PSAT and SAT are rescheduled.

Further guidance regarding food distribution, extra-curricular activities and athletic events will be announced shortly.
