An event was organized on Saturday to help put food on the Thanksgiving table for those in need.
A line was wound up around the corner at the Fort Myers Pendas law firm to help families get free turkeys.
For the 13th year in a row, Pendas Law Office workers wait for a truckload of turkeys to be delivered in person.
Lou Pendas is the CEO of Pendas Law Firm. “It started 13 years ago, when my client actually admitted to me that my family didn’t have money to buy Thanksgiving food,” Pendas said.
This year’s challenge is to strike a balance between meeting the needs of the community while keeping everyone safe. Another Thanksgiving has fallen into a pandemic, and measures have been taken to maintain its safety, such as wearing masks and social distancing.
The company’s CEO says he continues the tradition as he believes too many people are currently facing financial difficulties.
“As you can see, there are people here with a lack of oxygen, wheelchairs and organs, so not everyone is involved in getting this economy out of the pandemic,” Pendas said.
“These are the people who have come to us and they are sharing their difficulties,” Pendas said.
According to the organizers of the event, this year’s need is even more. “I honestly understand it’s not a permanent solution, but at least this Thanksgiving season, you don’t have to worry about your diet and you can take it,” Pendas said.
In all, Pendas said it has distributed 575 turkeys in Fort Myers and 3,000 at its other five locations across the state. Pendus also estimates that these gifts have supported more than 600,000 people over the past 13 years.
